City Tour Arequipa and Monastery

Arequipa is the White City, named for its white volcanic stones, which have been used in construction since colonial times. The City is a place with a pleasant climate, ideal for a pleasant trip while you get to know the local culture.
Plaza de Armas, city of Arequipa
Surrounded by several arches and the impressive Cathedral, in the center of the square is a beautiful three-section bronze fountain crowned by the figure of a 16th century soldier. who they call “Tuturutu”. The story goes that he was in charge of warning of any event. Around the square you can see three granite portals with brick and lime bases: Portal del Cabildo or Municipality, Portal de las Delicias or Portal de San Agustín and Portal del Regocijo or Portal de Flores.
Arequipa Cathedral
It is considered one of the first religious monuments of the 17th century in the city. It is built of white ashlar volcanic stone with a brick base. Destroyed by a fire in 1844, it was rebuilt in 1868 by the Arequipa architect Lucas Poblete. He used a neoclassical style and placed the church entrances in the side naves. In 2001, the building was hit hard by an earthquake that severely damaged its towers.
The Church of the Company of Jesus Christ
This complex, made up of buildings built by the Jesuits for religious and residential purposes, is a representative monument of religious architecture from the 17th century (1660). The church itself rises from the center of the buildings. It was designed in 1573 by Gaspar Báez and destroyed by an earthquake in 1584. The current structure dates back to 1650. Inside there are sixty-six canvases from the Cusco School by artists such as Bernardo Bitti and Diego de la Puente.
Monastery of Santa Catalina
Built to house the daughters of the city’s wealthiest families with a religious vocation, the monastery was inaugurated on October 2, 1580, with the name of Santa Catalina de Siena to be a completely cloistered religious center, and it remained that way until August. 15, 1970. It occupies an approximate area of 20,000 m2 (215,285 ft2), and its location is similar to the first neighborhoods of Arequipa. The building exhibits rooms of very different architectural design. One of the areas has been set up as a gallery to exhibit the canvases from the Schools of Cusco, Quito and Arequipa. There are also other rooms or sectors to visit, such as the Portería Cloister, the Pre-Columbian Museum, the San Francisco Cloister, etc.
Mirador de la Ciudad de Yanahuara located 2 km from the center of the city of Arequipa is the Yanahuara district that was built in the 19th century and is made up of a series of ashlar stone arches where the words of illustrious people of Arequipa have been engraved. This place is a wonderful viewpoint of the city and the Misti volcano in the background.
